Wittusen & Jensen: Freight labels with QR-codes improve our delivery

The Norwegian office supplies and consumer goods wholesaler Wittusen & Jensen print QR codes on their Consignor freight labels. This saves both time and money when they send parcels, while at the same time providing a better overview of their consignments.

It was a mixture of infatuation with the possibilities if the QR code and a wish to work more efficiently and save money on handling of parcels that brought Operations Manager Camilla Haltbakk, Wittusen & Jensen’s IT department and Consignor together in 2015 in a feat to find out, how the two could be united in a clever solution.

«We were already using Consignor to print freight labels and transfer shipment data to carriers and it was no problem to add the QR codes to the existing labels. Now, when customers receive our packages, they are able to scan the QR code and see a digital delivery note with information about the entire consignment’s contents. That way, it is easier for them to keep track of consignments divided into several deliveries,» says Camilla Haltbakk of Wittusen & Jensen

But QR codes on the freight label is not just an advantage for the receiver of the package. At Wittusen & Jensen, they save both time and money on sending parcels labelled with QR codes.

«We send more than 400.000 parcels every year. We are able to save the equivalent of an entire annual salary, as we don’t have to get an employee to put delivery notes in each and every parcel. We also save money on paper, toner and maintenance on printers. In addition, the number of inquiries from customers in connection with partial deliveries is reduced as they are able to see the entire delivery, what has been ordered and delivered via the digital delivery note,» says Camilla Haltbakk.

Wittusen & Jensen print and apply the freight labels with QR codes automatically via hydraulic printer on a conveyor belt and on forklifts in the warehouse during the picking process.

Automatic printing of labels with Consignor and Apport
«Wiiifffsvushpuff» is the sound of the hydraulic printer, at Wittusen & Jensen’s central warehouse just outside of Oslo, when they print and apply freight labels with QR codes onto consignments that are picked by a robot and packed by warehouse employees, ready for dispatch.

«We print labels on board the forklifts that drive around the warehouse picking larger items as well. That way we save time, as the items get a freight label as soon as they are picked. Consignor ensures that the correct freight label is printed on the forklift printer by retrieving the shipment data from our ordering system,» Camilla Haltbakk explains.

In addition to automatic printing of QR coded freight labels, Wittusen & Jensen see many other advantages to using Consignor as their delivery management system.

«No matter which distribution method we use, Consignor ensures that the shipment data we transfer to our carriers is of high quality. You could say that Consignor is a rule engine that keeps track of all rules and regulations at the carriers. That way, we make sure that we meet the demands of every carrier without having to keep track of them ourselves. Shortly put, Consignor ensures the deliveries to our customers,» Camilla Haltbakk concludes.
